Betty Jane Tompkins, the daughter of Henry and Gabriella (Roggeman) Johnson, was born November 8, 1930, in Murray County, Minnesota. She graduated from Garner High School in 1948. On August 20, 1949, she was married to Dean Tompkins at the United Methodist Church in Garner. They made their home on the Tompkins family farm south of Garner where they raised their family. Betty was a loving devoted mother who enjoyed family and hosted many family gatherings. Betty and Dean enjoyed many summers at their cabin in Lake of the Woods, Canada, fishing, hosting children and grandchildren, and making many friends. Betty also enjoyed working crossword puzzles, bowling league, her Ladies of 48 club, watching birds and wildlife around the farm and in her times at Arizona. Betty was devoted to exercise and made many friends at the Forest City YMCA. Betty spent several winters in Arizona after Dean’s passing, where she had family and enjoyed meeting neighbors (and their dogs who she knew by name - and there were many!).
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garner.
Betty is survived by her three children, Allen (Marian) Tompkins of Clear Lake, Larry (Sandi) Tompkins of Urbandale and Beth (Michael) Beaver of Garner; grandchildren, Sarah (Brady) Boese, Zach (Ita) Tompkins, Glenn (Kellee) Perisho, Tammy (Chris) Lippilo, Kelli (Trevor) Gear, Jessica (Tyler) Randall and Gabe Stearns; 10 great grandchildren; six sisters, Kathryn Burgener of Mesa, AZ, Ihla Jean Barz of Garner, LaVonne (Jim) Swanson of Minneapolis, MN, Carol Smith of Albert Lea, MN, Diane (Kent) Dugstad of Sun Lakes, AZ and Cindi (Dean) Kirkpatrick of Cortez, CO; a brother, Bob (JoLynn) Johnson of Albert Lea, MN; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Tompkins of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.
