FOREST CITY - Carroll N. Sougstad, 90, of Forest City, died Friday, September 28, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Forest City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial will be 2:30 P.M., Tuesday at Harrison Township Cemetery, Swea City, IA.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 PM, Monday at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St, Forest City and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Carroll was born on Nov. 12, 1921, to Edward and Ora Mae (Wicks) Sougstad in Fulton, South Dakota. He graduated from high school in Fedora, SD, and from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD, as well as earning his Master's degree in Music Education from Colorado State College of Education in Greeley, CO.

On June 4, 1950, he married Arlene Willeman at Hyde Park Methodist Church in St. Joseph, MO. They had three children, Mark, Steve, and Joyce. He taught instrumental and vocal music in several communities in South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa. One of his former students established a scholarship in his name for a Lake Preston, SD, high school student pursuing a degree in music. He also worked at Winnebago Industries until his retirement. He was a member of Sig's Band, Lions Club, and Immanuel Lutheran Church for more than 30 years. He enjoyed singing, and traveling to concerts, reunions, a variety of community events, and to support his grandchildren in their activities, for which he earned an award from Forest City Sports Boosters.

He is survived by son Mark Sougstad of Dallas, OR, grandchildren Amy (Jeremy) Wagner, Cory Sougstad, and Tait (Elissa) Sougstad; son Steven Sougstad of Forest City, grandchildren Randy (Sarah) Sougstad, William Sougstad, and Emma Sougstad; daughter Joyce (Neal) Flugum of Forest City, grandchildren Gary Flugum, Lyndi (Jerre) Flugum-Collins, Andrew Flugum; five great-grandchildren; sister Lois Mehus of Missoula, MT; sisters-in-law Joann (John) Townsend of Terre Haute, IN, and Venita Leiffring of Prairie Village, KS, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene; sisters Merle and Jean; brothers Edward, Eldon, and Orris, and infant grandson, Brett.
