A memorial visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday, March 14th at Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. 4th St., in Garner.

Memorials may be directed to St. Boniface Catholic Church or the Iowa Gamma Chapter of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity at Iowa State University.

Daniel Alan Young, son of Francis J. and Shirlene F. (Hestness) Young, was born on June 29, 1958, in Mankato, MN. Dan grew up in Garner and graduated from Garner-Hayfield High School in 1976. He went on to attend Iowa State University, where he was a proud member and supporter of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and earned a degree in Industrial Administration in 1980.

After graduating from ISU, Dan began his career as a store manager for Younkers department store in Marshalltown, Iowa. He later joined CF Airfreight, working in sales and operations roles in Minneapolis and Peoria, IL. In 1990, Dan transitioned into the emerging rural internet communications industry, working for DTN/Broadcast Partners and later with Prairie iNet in operations roles. In 2005, he joined Wells Fargo Home Mortgage in Des Moines as an Inventory Manager/Business Consultant. He concluded his professional career in January 2025 after spending 14 years with Principal Financial Group, where he served as a Senior Relationship Manager in the Document Support group.

Outside of work, Dan enjoyed traveling with family and friends, especially his trips to Europe, Hawaii, and the Lake of the Ozarks. He was an enthusiastic Iowa State Cyclone supporter and attended many sporting events over the years. Dan was the ultimate host, always welcoming others into his home with their favorite food and drinks. He could talk to anyone and made everyone feel at ease, no matter the social setting. Dan always showed up for his friends and family—he was the first to send a card, drop off flowers, or simply be present for those he loved. He never missed an opportunity to support his sisters, nieces, and nephews; he promised to always be there for them, and he kept that promise until his final days. Our lives won’t be the same without his constant love, support, and presence.

Dan is survived by his three sisters, Leslie (Rich) Tighe of Knoxville, TN, Jean (Mike) Klumpp of Sioux Falls, SD, and Carole (Bryan) Haan of Sioux Falls, SD; nine nieces and nephews, Abby (Devin) Schroeder, Kathryn Tighe, Emily Tighe, John Klumpp, Kyle (Ali) Klumpp, Annie (Gabe) Dannenbring, Ellie (Matt) Fitzgerald, Allison (Nick) Streeter, and Jake (Jessica) Haan; four great-nieces and nephews, McClain, Charli, and Gracyn Streeter, and baby Fitzgerald; aunts and uncles, Carl (Dianne) Young, Dick Young, Mildred Young, LoEtta Young, Yvonne Hestness, Dorothy Hestness, and Marie Hestness; along with many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis (Blick) and Shirlene Young; his uncles, Tony, Bob, Ray and Elmer Young, Ray Stupka, Virgil, Elwood, Adrian, Jerry and Gene Hestness; and his aunts: MaryAnn Stupka, Mary Young, Bonnie Young, Sandy Young, Gladys Hestness, Mavis Hestness, Valta Hestness, and Vivian Brudvig.
