Darlene L, Tweeten was born July 27, 1936 in rural Rockwell, Iowa, the daughter of Wallace and Ida (Oppedahl) Torkelson. Her family moved to rural Forest City in 1942, she graduated from Forest City High School in 1953. She was married to Walden C. Tweeten on March 4, 1956 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union three sons were born, Bennie, Dennis and Terry. Darlene worked for the Winnebago County Extension, Winnebago County Courthouse, GTE Telephone and eventually People’s Natural Gas until her retirement. Following retirement, she stayed active with her own sewing business (Darlene’s Country Sew) and as a food sampler at Bill’s Family Foods.
Darlene was a lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, member of the Red Hat Society, Leland Women’s Study Club and the Sons of Norway.
Music was a large part of Darlene’s life; she played the accordion, guitar, organ and sang. She was a member of the Leland Ramblers with her late husband; they shared their musical talents for many years throughout North Iowa. Playing music for Darlene was a natural talent since she played it by ear. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, quilting and dancing. In 2010, she took her very first plane ride in order to attend a Norwegian Festival (Norsk Hostfest) in Minot, ND. She enjoyed the time she spent with her family and friends and will be dearly missed by all who knew loved her.
Darlene is survived by her children; Bennie Tweeten, Dennis Tweeten (Kelly Fredrickson), Terry Tweeten and wife Shelby all of Forest City; grandchildren, Chelsey Faber and husband Andrew, Travis Tweeten and girlfriend Erin Cox, Tyler Tweeten and Shaden Tweeten; siblings, Florence Nelson of Lake Mills, Beverly Erickson and husband Norman of Seeley Lake, MT, Larry Torkelson of Forest City and Richard Torkelson of Forest City and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wallace and Ida Torkelson; husband, Walden in 1995; brothers, Donald Torkelson, Leroy Torkelson (in infany) and brother-in-law, Leonard Nelson.
