Doris Arlene Schulz, the daughter of Lyal and Anna (Sillman) Fox, was born May 3, 1922, on a farm northwest of Britt. She grew up on the farm and received her education in the rural schools of Orthel Township. In 1940, she graduated from Britt High School and furthered her education at Iowa State Teachers’ College in Cedar Falls, where she earned her normal teaching certificate. Doris dedicated four years to teaching in the rural schools of Hancock County, nurturing the minds of young students. On July 25, 1944, Doris married Earl Schulz at her parents’ home, and together they cultivated a life grounded in agriculture as they farmed southwest of Britt until their retirement in 1988, at which time they moved into town. Doris and Earl enjoyed their time spent wintering in Texas for over 25 years, creating cherished memories together. In her later years, Doris resided at the Summit House before moving to the Kanawha Community Home, where she remained until her passing. She had a zest for life, enjoying family gatherings, traveling, fishing trips to Canada with Earl, golfing, knitting, playing cards and board games.
She was actively involved in the Britt community. Memberships included Prairie Center Methodist Church, Britt United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, neighborhood Ever Ready Club, and many Bible study groups. She also led youth in Sunday School, Bible School, and 4-H.
Doris is survived by her three children, Jean (Elton) Sheets of Britt, Jim (Jan) Schulz of Hartsel, CO and Janet (E.C.) Daugard of Pearland, TX; six grandchildren, Doug (Marla) Pringnitz, Dusty (Sherry) Pringnitz, Sara (Luke) Bader, Melanie (Kris) Miller, Cory (Lea) Daugard, and Misti (Chet) Bohnert; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl in 2014; sisters, Imogene Schubert, Marjorie Snyder and Carol Schulz; and brothers, Earl and John Fox.
