Dorothea Elizabeth Hollatz, the daughter of Gustav and Louise (Dorow) Pueggel, was born September 29, 1913 on her parents' farm northwest of Clear Lake. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church near Garner. Dorothy attended the rural schools near her home, St. John's Parochial School and graduated from Ventura High School in 1931. She continued her education at Waldorf College in Forest City graduating with a teacher certificate. She taught in elementary schools at Garner, Ventura and Colwell, Iowa. On August 15, 1937 she was married to Conrad "Connie" Hollatz at St. John's Lutheran Church. They farmed northeast of Garner for 55 years until their retirement. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on August 15, 1987. After Connie's death on December 4, 1991, Dorothy moved to a condo in Garner. She later moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner and in 2007 the Concord Care Center. Besides the special joy of her family, Dorothy enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, playing cards, bowling (until she was 89), watching the Garner church league softball games and fishing in Minnesota. The family was thankful she could travel to Colorado, Long Island, NY, Minnesota and go on local country drives or for pancakes at Perkins in later years. In addition, the family spent many special hours playing games and reminiscing via her diaries (which she started at age 12), collections of Des Moines Register cartoons, artistic pieces, greeting card scrapbooks and favorite poems.
She was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church. Church was an important part of Dorothy's whole life which included Walter League days, Ladies Aid activities and teaching Sunday school for 25 years.
