CRYSTAL LAKE – Florence Knapper, 92, of Crystal Lake died Thursday (May 8, 2008) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.
Funeral services will be held 10 A.M., Saturday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt with Rev. David Bergstrom officiating. Burial will be at Crystal Township Cemetery in Crystal Lake.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
Florence Caroline Melinda Knapper, the daughter of Henry and Mary (Schmid) Bergman, was born April 7, 1916, on a farm west of Forest City. She attended Linden Township No. 3 country school in Winnebago County. She was married to Lloyd T. Gjerde. They made their home on farms in north Iowa moving to Crystal Lake in 1948. Florence helped raise their five children and worked as a cook for the Crystal Lake School system. On July 5, 1967, she was married to Earl Knapper in Las Vegas, NV. They lived in Southgate, CA where Florence managed an apartment complex. In 1975, they returned to north Iowa making their home in Crystal Lake. Florence worked for a time at the Westview Care Center in Britt. Due to ill health, Florence resided at Westview Care Center for the past 2 ½ years. She enjoyed gardening, bowling, playing cards, quilting and spending time with her family, especially, her grandchildren.
She attended Calvary Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake and was a member of the Crystal Lake Senior Citizens.
Florence is survived by her children, Lloyd (Alice) Gjerde of Altoona, Ronald (Judy) Gjerde of Billings, MO and Jody Burma and special friend, Bill Rout, of Woden; a daughter-in-law, Judy L. Gjerde of Columbus, MS; nine grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and two sisters, Marie Kingsbury of Britt and Esther Eller of Colo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Lloyd T. Gjerde and Earl Knapper; sons, Eugene Gjerde, Apr. 28, 2008 and Greg Gjerde, Jan. 2, 1965; brothers, Melvin “Mike” Bergman and Walter “Pat” Bergman; and sisters, Ethel “Dolly” Homes, Martha Riggle and Louise Meyer.
