Francis John Young, the son of Rudolph and Mary (Simper) Young, was born October 7, 1930 on the family farm west of Garner. He graduated from Garner High School in 1948. Blick served his country in the US Army during the Korean War as a high-speed radio operator. On August 16, 1955, he married Shirlene Hestness at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Forest City. Blick and Shirlene relocated to Minneapolis where he studied and graduated from the Dunwoody Institute with a drafting degree. Blick joined his brother, Raym in forming Young Brothers Construction; he designed and built many homes and businesses in Garner and the surrounding area. In the early 80’s, Blick and Shirlene owned and operated the Garner A & W. In 1985, Blick became the custodian and groundskeeper at St. Boniface Catholic Church a position which he held for twenty years. He enjoyed fishing trips to Canada, playing cards with his brothers, and trips with his beloved wife, Shirlene. In his later years, he moved to Sioux Falls, SD to be closer to his family where he embraced bird watching, Iowa/ISU sports, and discovered a new love for A & W root beer. His true joy came from frequent visits, video calls, and dinners with his children and grandchildren.
He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Garner VFW Post 5515, and the Garner American Legion Post 256.
Blick is survived by his children, Dan of Des Moines, Leslie (Rich) Tighe of Knoxville, TN, Jean (Mike) Klumpp of Sioux Falls and Carole (Bryan) Haan of Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren: Allison (Nick) Streeter, Jake (Jessica) Haan, John Klumpp, Kyle (Ali) Klumpp, Annie (Gabe) Klumpp, Ellie (Matt) Fitzgerald, Abigail (Devin) Schroeder, Kathryn Tighe, Emily Tighe; three great-grandchildren, McClain, Charli, and Baby Streeter; two brothers, Carl (Dianne) Young and Dick Young; sisters-in-law, LoEtta and Mildred Young of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.
