BRITT - Genevieve J. Nilges, 74, of Mason City, formerly of Britt died Friday (May 6, 2011) at Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held 11 A.M., Monday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt with Pastor Kathy Graves of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 A.M., Monday until service time at the funeral home.
Genevieve Joan Nilges, the daughter of Orville and Gemima (Hill) Nelson, was born September 2, 1936 on a farm northwest of Britt. She attended country school and graduated from Britt High School in 1954. Genevieve continued her education at Waldorf College in Forest City and graduated with a two year degree. She then taught kindergarten at Hull for two years. On August 9, 1958 she was married to Dale Nilges at the Kanawha Lutheran Church. They farmed near Britt for a year and during this time Geneveive taught school at Burt Public School. They then moved to a farm near Sumner and Genevieve taught school at Fredericka which was part of the Tripoli School system. After 13 years at Sumner they decided to buy a farm in the Elma area where they lived for the next 28 years. In June of 2000 Genevieve moved to Mason City. Genevieve enjoyed singing and music.
She was a member of the Lutheran Church in Elma where she held different offices in WELCA and taught Sunday school for many years. She belonged to the Britt VFW Auxiliary, was a 4-H member for twelve years and was recipient of the " God Home County Award".
Genevieve is survived by her three children, Bruce (Deanna) Nilges of Elma, Lora (Randy) Young of Maxwell and Lisa (Doug) Rose of Ft. Worth, TX; ten grandchildren, Jason , Matthew and Kirsten Nilges, Holly, Travis and Brittany Young and Julia, Logan, Sydney and Orion Rose; a sister, Clarice Schleuger of Woden; a brother, Orville (Bethine) Nelson of Iowa City; four nephews, Jim, John and Jay Nelson and Dean Schleuger; other relatives; and several friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents in May of 1982 and October of 1987; a grandson, Douglas Nilges, January of 1986; a niece, Diana Schleuger, June of 2000; and a brother-in-law, Donald Schleuger in 1982.
