BRITT - George F. Alke, 94, of Britt died Monday, October 8, 2012 at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 P.M., Thursday, October 11th at First Lutheran Church in Britt with Pastor Lee Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 P.M., Wednesday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church, Hospice of North Iowa or the American Cancer Society.
George Frederick Alke, the son of George and Anna (Assink) Alke, was born July 27, 1918 near Titonka. He attended the rural schools of Kossuth County until the eighth grade and helped his family on the farm. George was drafted into the U.S. Army but then received a hardship discharge due to his father's death. On February 8, 1944 he married Verna Holck at First Lutheran Church in Britt. They farmed south of Titonka until 1983 when they retired and moved into Britt. In May of 2002 they moved to the Summit House in Britt. George entered the Westview Care Center in October of 2011 due to health reasons. He enjoyed woodworking, jigsaw puzzles, singing and playing cards.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Britt and former member of Good Hope Lutheran Church in Titonka. George served on the church council for both churches and sang in the men's choir at Good Hope Lutheran Church.
George is survived by his daughter, Jan (John) Hana of Garner; granddaughter, Jennifer (Michael) Dillon of Denver, CO; three sisters, Ann (Gerald) Radig of Algona, Ida Thacker of Laguna Woods, CA and Mary (Al) Schwandt of Overland Park, MO; a brother, William "Bud" (Lois) Alke of Osage; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Verna, Mar. 7, 2005; brothers, John and Hank Alke; and sisters, Christina Seegebarth and Vollina Michaelsen.
