Lewis Leo Nedved, the third of seven children of Stanley and Mary (Bastyr) Nedved, was born August 21, 1925 on the family farm a half-mile north of Duncan. Lewis attended Garfield No. 9 country school and graduated from Britt High School in 1942. Following graduation, he helped his father on the farm. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II from August of 1945 until his honorable discharge in January of 1947. Lewis took training in Alabama and then was sent to Korea where he was stationed in Seoul. He was then sent to the Philippines for International Morse School and became a Radio Operator teaching in Korea. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned home and worked on building roads and at an implement shop. On August 3, 1948, he married Barbara Liska at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. They lived in Garner until December of 1950 when they moved to a farm 2 ½ miles north of Duncan where they raised their family. They farmed for 38 years there until 1988 when they moved back to the family farm. During all of this time he was also part-time field man for the ASC (Farm Service) for 30 years. In 1995 the couple retired from farming and moved into Garner. Lewis enjoyed his large garden in Garner, fishing, hunting, playing cards and helping his son, Lew on the farm. In his later years, he continued to operate the combine. He also enjoyed picking strawberries at Furleigh Farms and mushrooms at Eagle Lake and Pilot Knob.
He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Catholic Workman FCSLA w51, Britt American Legion and was a lifetime member of the Garner VFW. Lewis was proud to be a part of organizing the Hancock County Veterans Memorial in Garner.
