FOREST CITY - Loren G. Farrell, age 100 of Forest City, died Monday, December 28, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Petersen Lund Funeral Home 505 N Clark St Forest City
with Pastor Boyd Longshore officiating. Burial will be at Crystal Lake Cemetery in Crystal Lake, Iowa.
Visitation will be held an hour prior to service at the funeral home.
Loren G. Farrell was born on a farm in rural Kossuth County, Iowa on March 5, 1909, the son of Homer and Lucy (Pelton) Farrell. He received his education in rural schools near his home.
He was united in marriage to Irene Seibert and the couple made their home in the Crystal Lake area for much of their married lives. Loren began his working career as a farm hand and later began working road construction. The family moved to Bricelyn, Minnesota for two years where Loren managed a produce station.
They returned to Crystal Lake when Loren was offered a job at the lumber yard, where he continued until his retirement in 1969. While enjoying retirement, Loren continued to work. He drove a gravel truck, hauling for the county and Rohland Construction out of Estherville, Iowa. He also worked for Kayot-Forester, delivering travel trailers. Irene passed away in 1988. Loren married Dorothie Lackore in 1989 and the couple made their home in Forest City.
Loren loved tinkering with small engines and doing his own mechanical work. He operated the Crystal Lake Drive-In for several years and enjoyed hunting and fishing. A gifted musician, he played the guitar, banjo, mandolin and harmonica.
He is survived by five children: Lucille (Loren) Haan-Renze of Estherville; Janice Johnson of Hayfield; David (Gwen) Farrell of Olathe, Kansas; Irene Dow of Bennett, Colorado and Gordon (Carla) Farrell of Harford, California, 17 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons Loren and Robert, sisters Charlotte and Joy and a grandson, Lon.
