GARNER – Lucille M. McMillin Love,86, of Garner died Friday (April 18, 2008) at the Concord Care Center in Garner.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2008 at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner with The Rev. Paul Nelson of St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City, Iowa officiating. Following the service a lunch will be served.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Friday May 2, 2008 at Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner.
A Memorial Service with Dr. Timothy Smith and The Rev. Ted DuBois officiating will be at Apache Wells Community Church in Mesa, Arizona at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, April 27, 2008. A family visitation time will begin at 10:15 a.m.
A Memorial Service will be at 11:30 a.m. July 5, 2008 at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt, Iowa followed by burial in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Lucille’s nephew, The Rev. Christopher Boehnke of Risen Savior Lutheran Church, Tea, South Dakota, will officiate. Lunch will follow.
Lucille, the oldest child born to Edward and Elsa (Pueggel) Boehnke, was born March 22, 1922 near Garner. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Garner. She graduated from Garner High School in 1939 and continued her education at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. On October 22, 1943 she was united in marriage to Robert Leroy McMillin at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Garner. Bob and Lucille lived in Denver, Colorado and Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1945 they purchased the Terril Hardware Store in Terril, Iowa where they made their home until 1958. Lucille was employed from 1955-1958 as Secretary for the Terril School District.
In 1958 Bob and Lucille moved to Emmetsburg, Iowa where Lucille worked as secretary in the Emmetsburg High School principal’s office. In 1966 they moved to Grundy Center, Iowa where Lucille was employed by Grundy County as Director of Homemaker Health Aid for several years, then worked for the Grundy County Superintendent of Schools. In 1972 she became an employee of the Grundy County Clerk of Court until retiring in October of 1988. She was an active member of the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center, The Grundy County Historical Society, and Business and Professional Women.
On August 16, 2002 she was united in marriage to Quentin Love, a classmate from the Garner High School Class of 1939, at American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center. They made their home in Mesa, Arizona and had great fun traveling the USA. In February of 2008 they moved to Garner.
Lucille was fond of flowers, gardening, cooking, history, and especially genealogy. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family and grandchildren. She loved to tell stories and told many great stories about the history of people, places, and things. She shared her love of God’s amazing works with everyone she met and used her talents to help others.
She is survived by her husband, Quentin Love of Garner; her daughter Jane Eileen Brownlee and husband Ron of Houston, Texas; her son Charles Edward McMillin of Ellicott City, Maryland; five grandchildren: Richard Arthur Brownlee and wife Carla of Houston, Julia Elizabeth Royster and husband Jason of Warwick, Rhode Island, Jennifer Elsa Gustafson and husband Trent of Boulder, Colorado, Charles Collin Brownlee and wife Allison of Houston, Sean Robert McMillin of Ellicott City; one great-granddaughter, Charlotte Elizabeth Brownlee of Houston; three sisters: Irma Nissen and husband Ralph of Ames, Iowa, Marilyn Hayes and husband Harlan of Garner, Kay Eginton and husband Bill of Iowa City, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Norma Boehnke Nutting, of Clear Lake, Iowa, Linda Boehnke of Omaha, Nebraska; many nieces and nephews; and also Quentin’s children: Christie Von Protz and husband Paul of West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, Linda Petersen and husband Wayne of Iowa City, Iowa, Jeffrey C. Love of Grand Junction, Iowa; grandchildren: Matthew Von Protz, West Bridgewater, Brandice Armstrong, Kailee Peterson, and Schyler Petersen, all of Iowa City; one great-grandson Thomas James Freestone, Iowa City.
Lucille was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Leroy McMillin, February 28, 1985; her son Roger Lynn McMillin, September 10, 1997; her father, Edward Richard Martin Boehnke, December 8, 1979; her mother Elsa Margareth Pueggel Boehnke, March 27, 1937; her brothers, James Boehnke and Donald Boehnke; and an infant sister, Ruth.
Memorial Contributions in her name may be made to Apache Wells Community Church, Mesa, Arizona, Lutheran World Relief, a joint international ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, or a charity of your choice.
