Lyle “Jay” Jensen, 80, of Garner, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, February 11, 2019 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Rev. Jim Dubert officiating. Burial will be at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Garner with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 P.M., Sunday, February 10th at St. Boniface Catholic Church with a Scriptural wake service at 1:30 P.M. Visitation will resume one hour prior to services at the church.
Lyle “Jay” Leslie Jensen, the son of Leslie Ivan and Rose (Besch) Jensen, was born September 12, 1938 in Lakota, Iowa. He grew up on a farm near Livermore and graduated from Livermore High School in 1956. Jay served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1957 to 1961. He was selected to serve on the honor guard in Paris, France for President Dwight Eisenhower. During his time in France, he met and married Phyllis Smith. They were married in the States on September 8, 1960 in Sioux City, Iowa. Jay farmed with his father near Livermore until 1963 when he and Phyllis moved to Garner. He was employed at Massey Ferguson and, in 1980, Walnut Grove Feed Service in Garner until his retirement. In his retirement, Jay worked as a green’s keeper at the Garner Golf Course and drove for Pritchard Auto Company in Garner. He enjoyed all sports and following his grandchildren’s activities.
He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner.
Jay is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of Garner; five daughters, Tina Jensen of Urbandale, Pam (Dennis) Jones of Garner, Brenda (Jay) Wheeler of Granger, Deb (Dave) Engstler of Garner and Angie (Beau) Greiman of Naperville, IL; 11 grandchildren, Kwin (Craig) Novacek, Kayli (Ryan) Ytzen, Kade (Emily) Jones, Jacob Wheeler, Katie Wheeler, Justin Wheeler, Whitney (Trevor) Urich, Jade (Tyler) Kahlstorf, Jace Engstler, Connor Greiman and Carson Greiman; 10 (soon 11) great grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Ann (Bob) Berte of Bode; and 6 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
