Ventura, Iowa - Lynn R. Benson, 64, of Ventura died Friday, March 23, 2018 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City after a courageous 14 year battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Cataldo Schott Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark St. Forest City, Iowa 50436 with the Pastor Rod Hopp of Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating.

A gathering of friends and family will be held one hour prior to the services at the funeral home on Saturday.

Burial of cremains will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Lynn Benson memorial fund in care of the family.

The family invites everyone to join them for a Celebration of Lynn’s life that will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. Saturday at the Ventura Community Center in Ventura, Iowa.

Lynn R. Benson was born April 15, 1953 in Forest City, the son of Robert and Katherine (Rollefson) Benson. Lynn was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. He attended and graduated from Forest City High School in 1971. He started working at the Harbourage in Clear Lake in the spring of 1971 for 3 months, then went to work for Steven Hanna of Woden running construction equipment. He was married to Kristi Thompson in 1976, they later divorced. While farming he worked for Holland Construction in Forest City for 3 years, then went to work for LaHarv Sand & Gravel for many years. Lynn started his own excavating business for five years, then went to work for Yohn Construction for 19 years. In 2005 he started hauling chicken litter with his boys and in 2007 started L.B. & Sons with his son, Travis. Lynn moved dirt most of his life, he had a keen eye which is how he got the name “Laser Lynn”. He took a great sense of pride in his work and enjoyed it as well.

Lynn lived in the Forest City area until 1990, then he moved to Ventura where he met Marcia Olson. Lynn and Marcia resided in Ventura, a town he cared about, he served as Mayor from 2012-2018.

Lynn enjoyed drinking coffee at the local gas station and visiting, had a passion for snowmobiling and watching his son, Aaron race. Lynn enjoyed his family, especially the time he spent with his grandchildren. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Lynn is survived by Marcia Olson of Ventura; sons, Sheldon, Travis and Aaron; grandchildren, Toni, Rebecca, Brandi, Kortney and Annika; great-grandchildren, Izabella and RoseAlee; brothers, Randi Benson, Steven (Susan) Benson; sister, Lori (Brian) Tomasek; nephews, Logan, Coltn and Hunter Benson; aunts, Marjorie Anderson, Dorothy Etzen and Julianne Tosel, many cousins and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Derek in infancy and brother, David Benson.
