Mary A. Young

GARNER – Mary A. Young, 92, of Garner died Thursday, October 8, 2015 at Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Thursday, October 15th at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Fr. Jim Dubert officiating. Burial will be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 P.M., Wednesday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. 4th St., in Garner with a Scriptural wake service and rosary at 4:30 P.M. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Mary Alice Young, the daughter of Joseph and Rosina (Faas) Thome, was born April 12, 1923 in Meyer, Iowa. She attended Sacred Heart School in Meyer. Mary worked at various jobs in the Stacyville and Osage area and at Henson’s Manufacturing in Waterloo. On October 15, 1946 she was married to Anthony “Tony” Young at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer. They made their home in Garner where they raised their family. After the children were grown, she worked for thirteen years in the Garner-Hayfield School lunch program. She enjoyed her grandchildren, her flower garden, baking and cooking for her family. Mary was known for always remembering to send cards and letters and her great family meals and pies.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and Rosary Society where she served as circle leader for over ten years.

Mary is survived by her six children, Rose Mary (Edward) Ruddy of Fort Dodge, Barbara Jo (Tim) Gollaher of Fort Worth, TX, Michael Young of Garner, Mark (Laura) Young of Larkspur, CO, Karen Ann (Doug) Beard of Floyd and Lawrence “Larry” (Jan) Young of Garner; thirteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Thome of Osage; sisters, Marjorie Mayer of Meyer, Imelda Mayer of Stacyville, Lorena Pannhoff of Ventura and Emilie Gerlock of Carterville, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Anthony; and two brothers, Ben and Joseph Thome.
