FOREST CITY - Mildred Ostrander, 102, of Forest City, died Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at l:30 PM, Friday, June 7, 2013 at First Baptist Church in Forest City, with Pastor Doug Snyder officiating.

Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM, Thursday, June 6, at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark Street, Forest City and continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Mildred Evelyn Ostrander, the daughter of Martin and Emma (Isaacson) Borg, was born March 5, 1911 in Forest City. At an early age she moved to a farm east of Forest City. She attended Ellington #3 School and was a graduate of Forest City High School.

She was baptized and became a member of First Baptist Church in Forest City in 1925. In her early years she was a Sunday School teacher, secretary of the Sunday School and taught bible school for several years. She took the Normal Training Course and taught rural school for six years. In 1935 she was married to Robert Ostrander of Thompson. The couple farmed in the Thompson and Buffalo Center area for many years. They moved to Forest City in 1984.

Mildred was active in the farming operation and always kept a garden and did lots of canning. She raised chickens for the egg money. Her children remember her as being a "wonderful cook". She taught herself how to play the piano.

In December of 2009 she moved to the Titonka Care Center, where she made her home and made many new friends. She enjoyed living there.

Mildred is survived by her children, Bonnie Gonzalez of Seattle, WA., Mary Lee (Carlyle) Kiewiet of Forest City, Jon (Kathie) Ostrander of Thompson, and Gloria (Richard) Bachler of St. Charles, MO.; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and one waiting to join the family; and a sister, Arlys Hendrickson of Humboldt, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; brothers, Lennea, Albert, Orville and Kenyon; and sisters, Ruth, Verlyene and Gloria.
