FOREST CITY - Nancy Steffen, age 92 of Forest City, died Saturday, June l 12, 2010 at the IOOF Home in Mason City, Iowa.
A Memorial Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at Petersen Lund Funeral Home 505 N Clark St in Forest City.
A Private Family Memorial Service will be held at a later date with inurnment to follow at Crystal Lake Cemetery in Crystal Lake, Iowa.
Nancy Steffen was born in Montpelier, ND on February 20, 1918, the daughter of John and Grace (Roetman) VerHoef. As a small child, she moved with her family to Iowa and settled west of Forest City. She attended rural school near her home.
She married Leonard Steffen on May 23, 1954 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. The couple farmed west of Forest City for many years. Nancy worked for a time at Harold’s Candies and then at Great Western Products.
After retiring, Nancy and Leonard enjoyed spending the winters down south ~ initially in Florida and then in Texas for many years. Nancy loved flowers and enjoyed caring for her flower beds. She liked to sew and crochet. She was a wonderful cook and her children remember the delicious “care packages” sent home with them after meals. Nancy was a long-time member of Grant Lutheran Church in Woden, IA.
She is survived by her three children: James (Lisa) Steffen of Forest City; Mike Steffen of Forest City and Mary (Jon) Wicks of Mason City: seven grandchildren; Natalie Harmon & Chad Hoins, Nicole Harmon & Jerry Lorenson, Nolan Harmon, Benjamin Wicks, Tyler Wicks, Andrea (Jason) Holdeman and Ashley Steffen and two great-granddaughters, Grace and Olivia Holdeman. Also surviving is a brother, John (Marge) VerHoef of Forest City.
Nancy is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, siblings Herman VerHoef, Kate Baartman, Jean Gahan and Francis VerHoef.
