Phyllis Henrietta Janes, the daughter of Meindert and Flora (Franzen) Ullmann was born on December 4, 1931 at her parent’s home in rural Titonka. She received her education in the country school, where she learned to speak English and graduated from Titonka High School in 1950. Phyllis married Willis LuVerne Janes at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on March 15, 1951. The couple moved to Woden and began their farming career. Later they moved to Wesley to the family farm and continued to farm. While there, Phyllis truly loved her farm life as she enjoyed her cows, her chickens, the hogs, sheep, raising dogs, gardening, the many flowers, the sound of the John Deere “putt-putt”, and the rooster crowing.
Phyllis and Willis moved the family to Britt in September of 1968. Phyllis began her city life and her first paycheck at Wilson’s Super Valu in Britt. While employed by Wilson’s, Phyllis worked as a produce manager and clerk, where she entered many contests with her fruits and vegetables displays and won many awards. In 1980, Phyllis went to work for Hancock County Memorial Hospital as a dietary cook until her retirement in 1995.
Phyllis joined her Concord Care Center family in November of 2010 where she welcomed her new family of friends and enjoyed many outings and activities. Phyllis’ family would like to thank the Concord staff and Hospice of North Iowa for the excellent care she received. She loved playing her accordion, the guitar, piano, organ and polka music. Phyllis loved to bake and cook, she also loved sewing, quilting, racing, raising Pomeranian dogs, feeding the birds, gardening, her flower gardens, cleaning her house, golfing with her friends and having coffee with friends. She dearly loved her family and the trips with her three daughters and granddaughter. Phyllis always had the coffee pot on until 3:00 P.M. where it changed to the teapot.
She was a member of the Britt Christian Reformed Church for many years and most recently was a member of the Britt Zion Church of the Nazarene. She also had belonged to the Britt Lion Club.
Phyllis is survived by her four children, Verdelle Janes of Garner, Marline (Robert) Lewerke of Garner, Arliss (Robert) Bailey of North Carolina and Ronald (Pam) Janes of Olathe, KS; three grandchildren, Lori (Wilken, Jr.) Benjamin of Mundelein, IL, William (Amanda) Janes of Olathe and Matthew Janes of Olathe; three great-grandchildren, Wilken III (Tre), Olivia and Marin; two sisters, Geraldine (Howard) Bosma and Mildred (Melvin) Gray; sisters-in-law, Arliss Ullmann, Marcia Ullmann, Deloris Ruter, and Sandra Janes; brothers-in-law, Gary Zwiefel, Jeremiah Schmidt and Robert Ruter; and many nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
