FOREST CITY -- Richard B. Banken, age 86, formerly of Forest City, died Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral service will be Saturday, March 17, at 10:30 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Barb Spaulding officiating. Burial will be at Elk Creek Cemetery in rural Kensett. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Friday, March 16 at the funeral home and an hour prior to service at the church.
Richard B. Banken was born in Hanlontown, Iowa, on January 9, 1921, the son of Halvor and Beulah (Highsmith) Banken. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, Iowa. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1939. He was united in marriage to Deloris Hogen on November 25, 1943 in Kensett, Iowa.
Richard was co-owner of The Cherokee Floral in Cherokee, Iowa for ten years and purchased the Forest City Greenhouse in 1956 and sold it in 1975. He worked at Winnebago industries, Immanuel Lutheran Church and Waldorf College. In 1980 he was the grower and manager of McCoyís Greenhouse.
Richard was active in community affairs. He served on the Forest City Planning and Zoning Committee for fifteen years. He served on the Board of Trustees of Immanuel Lutheran Church and was an usher for many years. He was also a member of the Kum Along Klub.
Richard is survived by two daughters: Kathy and her husband, Rev. Don Hodson, of Coralville, Iowa; Becky and her husband, Dale Havel, of Olmstead Falls, Ohio; grandsons Lee Hodson and his wife Jennifer of Chicago, Illinois and Adam Havel of Cleveland, Ohio; great-granddaughter Avery; one sister, Pat Morgan of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, one brothers and two sisters.
