BRITT – Ruth Binkard, 94, of Britt died Thursday (April 3, 2008) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held 11 A.M., Monday at the United Methodist Church in Britt with Rev. Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 P.M., Sunday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Britt United Methodist Church or the Britt Swimming Pool Fund.

Ellen Ruth Binkard, the daughter of Benjamin Alfred and Crescy Ellen (Downing) Ball, was born February 7, 1914 on a farm near Collins. She attended the rural schools through the eighth grade and graduated from Maxwell High School in 1931. She continued her education at Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls graduating in 1938 with a degree in primary education. Ruth taught for 10 ½ years in rural schools and then in Rutland, Webb and first grade in Garner. On July 29, 1945 she was married to Frank E. Binkard at her parent’s home in Eldora. They lived in Webb for 13 years where they operated a Drug-Sundry Store with Frank’s father. In 1959 they moved to Britt where they owned and operated the Coast to Coast Hardware Store until retiring in 1979. She enjoyed gardening, quilting and traveling.

Ruth was a member of the United Methodist Church in Britt, UMW,United Methodist Sewing Group, United Methodist Builders Club, Rebekah Lodge, Britt American Legion and VFW Auxiliary, Federation of Women’s Club, Hancock County Hospital Auxiliary, Hancock County Historical Society, Silver Stars and the King’s Daughters. She received the Governor’s Award for volunteer service from Governor Terry Branstad in 1994.

She is survived by her daughter, Beryl Binkard Collins and her husband, Larry Collins of Fairborn, OH; a granddaughter, Cassandra Collins; a sister, Anna Laura Carlson of Prescott, AZ; a brother, Dr. Roger (Louise) Ball of Midland, TX; and sisters-in-law, Betty Ball of Grundy Center and Harriett Donovan of Guthrie Center.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; parents; a sister, Doris Christian; and four brothers, Dr. Edwin, John, Dr. Dale and Glen Ball.
