FOREST CITY - Zelma M. Harms, age 82 of Forest City, died Sunday, January 24, 2010 at Concord Care Center in Garner, Iowa.
As per her wishes, her body has been cremated.
A Graveside Memorial Service will be held in the spring at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, Iowa.
Zelma M. Harms was born in Emmett, Nebraska on June 19, 1927, one of eight children of Samuel and Clara (Growdy) Banks. She was raised in O'Neill, Nebraska and received her education there.
She enlisted in the Army Nurses Corps in 1944. She met Herman Harms during her service time and in 1951 they were married. Herman was a career military officer and over the years the family spent time in Japan, Germany, England, North Africa and Taiwan.
In 1961, Herman retired from the service and the family moved to Thornton, Iowa, later moving to Forest City.
Zelma was an avid reader, loved to do cross-word puzzles, and enjoyed playing bingo and penny pitch.
She is survived by her daughter Alice Lisco and husband Larry of Forest City; grandson Greg (Cindy) Harms of Garner, IA, twin great-grandsons Brody and Tyler, step-great-grandson Brandon and a sister Barb.
She was preceded in death by her husband and six siblings.
